DIY checks: what’s safe

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Nash Mills

Our roof survey gives you a clear picture of your roof’s condition. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, along with the loft where it is safe to get in. You get a written report with photos and recommendations. Where it helps, we say which items are urgent and which can wait. Typical surveys look at water stains on rafters and ceiling joists and ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs, across ridges, hips and valleys, chimney stacks and natural slate.

Trees around homes in smaller places like Nash Mills drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls, and moss holds water against tiles. It’s the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from ground level.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Nash Mills questions

Will you come out to Nash Mills?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

I let a flat near Apsley station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you need.

Do you go up on the roof?

Where it is safe, yes. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the roof space. On Premium, a drone is used where it applies.

Does someone need to be in?

That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

Can you check whether my roof contains asbestos?

No. Asbestos testing is not part of our service. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on older buildings, we flag them and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It is included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.

Are you insured?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

What a roof survey looks like in Nash Mills

If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Nash Mills is part of Hemel Hempstead, one of the post-war new towns. Homes from the post-war decades are common in the new towns, many with low-pitched roofs in concrete tiles and flat-roofed garages or porches. On homes of that age, felt underlay, flat roofs, gutters and fixings may all be due attention.

With High Elms Manor about 3.1 miles south-east, the area around Nash Mills has a long history. Older roofs nearby often mix original materials with later repairs, and the survey shows where each one is. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Nash Mills Church of England Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

Nash Mills is about 2 miles south of Hemel Hempstead, in Hertfordshire. Nash Mills gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful look at whatever is safely visible, photos and a clear written report. Why it’s worth a survey now in Nash Mills

Hidden gutters and valleys can fail without warning. When they do, water comes straight into the house. A survey checks them while they’re still dry. With lower homes, common in places like Nash Mills, there’s little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.

Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

How the survey works

Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs. On timing, it usually takes about one to two hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Being in a smaller place like Nash Mills doesn’t change how the visit works: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.

  1. We start by hearing what you’d like checked and why.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday or a weekend.
  3. We look at the roof from each safe vantage point, inside and out.
  4. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all examined and photographed.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Advice

Tips that help

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Check the roof from the ground after storms
  • Include dormers, porches and garages when you book
  • Find records of any re-roofing or repairs
  • Keep a record of damp patches and dates

Your report arrives by email, with photographs of what we found. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium. Findings are explained in plain words.

Keep the loft space ventilated. A stuffy loft collects condensation, and it can wet timbers and insulation. Make sure insulation does not block the airflow at the eaves.

Signs you need a roof survey in Nash Mills

Every roof takes years of rain, wind, sun and frost. Strong gusts work at anything that is not firmly fixed, while rain gets into every gap. Small faults that start this way grow over time.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Debris building up in roof valleys
  • Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
  • Loose chimney pots

Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Their report turnaround times
  • What the survey will not cover
