Roof survey in St Peter's
Across London and South East England, roofs differ widely. If your home is a Victorian terrace, it may have Welsh slate, a butterfly roof and parapet gutters, while many post-war homes have concrete interlocking tiles. We adapt the survey to the roof in front of us. Older tiled homes may have clay plain tiles, and many homes have a flat-roofed extension too. Each part is checked in the way that suits it. We’re often asked to look into torn or sagging underlay and cracked mortar along the ridge, on flat roofs, chimney stacks and ridges, hips and valleys.
In a smaller place like St Peter's, homes range from older cottages to bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes often need the most attention. Nails and battens under older coverings often give out before the slates or tiles themselves.
Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, along with how urgent it is.

The survey, step by step
There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. A typical survey takes about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Being in a smaller place like St Peter's doesn’t change how the visit works: we look from the ground, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it is safe. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.
- You let us know about the property and any concerns.
- A visit is booked for a weekday or a weekend.
- We inspect from ground level, from windows, from the roof space and from the roof where safe.
- We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, and photograph what we find.
- Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.

What happens if roof problems are left?
Many roofs go years without anyone looking at them closely. Our report gives you a record of how the roof is today, which makes later changes easy to spot. Homes in smaller places like St Peter's can face more weather, so a loose ridge or verge soon lets rain in. Each storm lifts it a little further, and water follows.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT.

Roof surveys in St Peter's: local notes
The coast is about 2 miles or less from St Peter's, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift. About 4.2 miles west lies Quex Park, a reminder of how long the area around St Peter's has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
Anyone responsible for a site like Dane Court Grammar School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. If you own a rental within reach of Broadstairs station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Westwood Cross, a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks.
St Peter's is about 1 mile north-west of Broadstairs, in Kent. In St Peter's, as across Kent, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our area takes in places right across Kent. We also survey roofs in Canterbury.

When you need someone else
Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey will not do:
- How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
- Walls, floors and services below the roof
- Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding

Roof types and parts we check
- Flat roofs
- Ridges, hips and valleys
- Lead flashings
- Natural slate
- The roof space
- Clay and concrete tiles
- Chimney stacks
What we look for on each type of roof
Concrete interlocking tiles
Interlocking tiles on shallow roofs depend on their laps and fixings. Lifted or cracked tiles are noted, particularly at the verges and ridge.
Natural slate
Slate is common on older homes in London and South East England. Widespread slipping normally points to corroded nails, and we say how widespread it looks.
What you can safely check yourself
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Your questions about roof surveys in St Peter's
Will you come out to St Peter's?
Yes. St Peter's is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Is my home in St Peter's listed or in a conservation area?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
What do you check on a roof survey?
Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, plus the roof space where there is safe access. You get a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations.
How many surveys have you done?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
Do you go up on the roof?
Only when it is safe. We also use views from the ground, windows and the loft space.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.
What insurance do you have?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
