Aston questions

Are flat-roofed garages and porches in Aston worth including?

Normally, yes: let us know about it as you book so the visit can include it. Many homes in new towns like Stevenage have flat-roofed garages and porches, and felt roofs often last around 15–20 years.

Will you come out to Aston?

Yes, Aston is covered. Our area covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

What does a storm damage report cost?

Our reports start from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. The report does not include repair costs.

Do you use drones?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

Will you check the loft?

If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. The roof space can show things the outside cannot, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys run seven days a week. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?

The decision is your insurer’s, not ours. We record the damage, with photographs and the likely cause, which you can pass to your insurer.

Storm damage roof report in Aston: what you get

Storms tend to find the weak points on a roof. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Falling branches can cause damage too. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. We survey slate and tile slopes, ridges and hips and chimney stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are ridge tiles that have come loose and gaps where slates or tiles have gone.

Many homes in small places like Aston face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, along with how urgent it is.

What happens on the day

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. It usually takes about one to two hours at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Somewhere as small as Aston, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Storm damage roof reports in Aston: local notes

Historic houses like Aston Bury, about 0.7 miles south, show how far back building in the area around Aston goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Stevenage, which Aston is part of, is one of England’s post-war new towns. Homes from the post-war decades are common in the new towns, many with low-pitched roofs in concrete tiles and flat-roofed garages or porches. Leaks on homes like these often come from flat-roofed additions or from rain driven up under low-pitched tiles.

If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. Anyone responsible for a site like Aston St Mary's Church of England Aided Primary School will know that on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.

What a survey costs

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:

  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • The size of the roof
  • Height and safe access

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.

What to tell us when you get in touch

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to let us know:

  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Anything about access we should know
  • What kind of property and roof it is

Once you know what you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us. We will suggest a package, agree the price and find a date.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A few slipped slates can soon lead to wet timbers. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is normally better. Outbuildings and barns around Aston are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

All our prices include VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before booking.

Can I check my roof myself?

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

When to book a survey in Aston

Falling trees and branches can damage roofs in high winds. The report shows what was hit and the damage caused, backed up with photos.

People typically book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:

  • Slipped or missing slates or tiles
  • Stains appearing after strong winds
  • Flat roof edges peeled back
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles

For landlords with property near Knebworth station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • Are they insured for the work?

What’s in a roof survey

Before and after the survey

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Check your policy for how to report damage
  • Photograph the damage safely from below

Questions about the findings are always welcome. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.

Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.
