- Whether your insurer will pay the claim
- Acting for you with the insurer
- What your policy covers, which depends on its wording

Storm damage roof report in Birch
What counts as a storm depends on your policy, though many use gusts of about 55 mph. Your policy document sets out its own definition. We don’t decide whether a storm met that test. We record the damage and what seems to have caused it. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. If you’ve noticed damage from fallen branches or debris and stains appearing after strong winds, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Being in a small place like Birch makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. It’s useful to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

What we are asked to look at in Birch
Strong winds lift loose or poorly fixed slates and tiles, ridge pieces and flashings. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. People typically call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.
Problems we come across often include:
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
- Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
- Damaged pots on the stack
Take an older house close to Church of St Peter and St Paul: old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Birch
Is Birch in the area you cover?
Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Birch is part of that. You can ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a few details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Is my home in Birch listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
How strong does the wind have to be for a storm claim?
There’s no single figure. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Your policy document will say.
Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?
We can’t say whether a claim will be paid. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
What’s the best way to book?
To book, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Will my insurer pay for an old roof?
Wear and tear is not usually covered. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. Your insurer decides the claim.
What happens on the day
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect what can safely be seen, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The survey typically takes an hour or two for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Birch often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
- We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- We record fresh damage and older defects.
- The report, with photos, is emailed to you.
How to prepare
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Advice
Birch roofs and the weather
With Layer Marney Tower about 1.7 miles south-west, Birch sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.
If you let a flat or house near Marks Tey station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. Anyone responsible for a site like Birch Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.
Birch is about 5 miles south-west of Colchester, in Essex. Whether the building in Birch is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, we can survey the roof. We cover towns and villages across Essex, from the larger towns to small villages. You can also see our page for Chelmsford.

Chimney stacks
Wind can pull the flashings away from a chimney. We photograph any we find.
Ridge and hip tiles
The ridge and hips are among the most exposed parts of a roof. The survey notes loose, cracked or missing ridge and hip tiles.
What affects the price in Birch
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details. The price is agreed before a date is set.
What we need to know
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- The kind of building and roof involved
- Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- Any deadline, like an exchange date
Unsure which package suits your roof? It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will talk you through the options and what they cost.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.
