Storm damage roof report in East End: what you get
High winds typically affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Any older wear we can see is recorded as well. We’re often asked to look into damaged pots on the stack and slipped or missing slates or tiles, on chimney stacks, flashings and ridges and hips.
Many homes in small places like East End face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Common questions in East End
Is the coastal weather around East End hard on roofs?
Often, yes. East End is within about 2 miles of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in East End?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.
How much is a storm damage roof report?
Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT. Larger or more complex roofs are quoted for their size. It doesn’t include repair costs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for those.
How experienced are you?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when booking.
DIY checks: what’s safe
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in.
East End roofs and the weather
East End lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain finds any gap they leave. With Castle House about 3.1 miles south-west, East End sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you let a flat or house near Manningtree station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Michael and All Angels, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Tips that help
Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. A few suggestions:
- Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
- Photograph damage inside the house too
- Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
- Don’t go onto the roof to take pictures
Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
A well-maintained roof stands up to storms better. Fix slipped slates, loose ridges and lifted flashings when you spot them.
How it works
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you’d like to know. We then inspect everything that can safely be seen. The survey normally takes an hour or two on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. For a village or hamlet like East End, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- You receive the written report with photos.
Preparing for the visit
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent

Advice
Do you need a storm damage roof report in East End?
Flat roofs can be damaged too. Coverings can tear or peel back at the edges, and water can pond where outlets are blocked. We record what we find on flat and pitched roofs alike.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Holes or cracks caused by debris
- Loose or torn flashings
- Damaged flat roof membrane
- Ridge tiles that have come loose
Anyone responsible for a site like Brooklands Primary School will know that tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Surveys for landlords and agents in East End
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait, which helps with budgets and planning.
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, putting the urgent items at the top.
