Storm damage roof report in Eddington

When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. Our report shows the damage in photos and says whether it looks like storm damage, wear and tear, or a mix. We aren’t loss adjusters, and we cannot say whether a claim will be paid. What we give you is an independent record of the roof. If you are worried about gaps where slates or tiles have gone and broken or displaced guttering, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Around Eddington, chimneys on older homes are a common source of leaks, at the flashings, the pointing or the mortar round the pots. Damp in a chimney breast can have more than one cause, so it is not always obvious where it starts. It is worth looking at the stack from outside and at the timbers beside it in the loft.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Useful tips for Eddington property owners

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:

  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
  • Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can

If you are unhappy with how your insurer handles the claim, you can complain to them first. If that does not resolve it, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.

When you need someone else

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • How your policy defines a storm
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll suggest the right survey. What our survey covers.

Eddington questions

Does being near the coast affect roofs in Eddington?

Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.

Is Eddington within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Do you act for me with my insurer?

No. We are not loss adjusters and don’t act for you with the insurer. We give you an independent report of the damage, which you can pass to your insurer.

What’s the best way to book?

Simply ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We check the roof, not the whole building, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

How long does the survey take?

It usually takes about one to two hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. We’ll confirm the timing when you book.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

It depends on what we need to see. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access.

Different roofs, different checks

Slate roofs

Slates often outlast the nails that hold them. We check whether slipped slates suggest storm damage, older wear or both.

Chimney stacks

High winds can loosen pots, cowls and aerials on stacks. The report notes any damage to the stack.

What we do, step by step

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Homes around Eddington often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is checked where it can be reached safely.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. The roof is inspected from safe positions.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Arrange a survey

We survey roofs on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a date that works for you, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Related advice

Leave it or get it looked at?

Before temporary repairs, photograph the damage from ground level if it is safe. That keeps a record of how it looked. Around Eddington, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.

There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.

Storm damage roof reports around Eddington

Eddington lies within about 2 miles of the sea, so storms can arrive with strong gusts off the water. What counts as a storm is set by each policy, frequently gusts of around 55 mph, and the insurer makes the decision. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. You’ll also find oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses among the county’s older buildings. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Martin, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Herne Bay High School, a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you own a rental within reach of Herne Bay station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Eddington is about 1 mile south-west of Herne Bay, in Kent. Eddington is one of many places we visit across Kent, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. Eddington is one of the places in Kent where we work for storm damage roof reports. For surveys nearby, see our Canterbury page.
