How a storm damage roof report works in Gubbion's Green

High winds usually affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Typical damage includes lost slates and tiles, lifted ridges, loose flashings and torn flat roof coverings. Trees and branches can also hit roofs in a storm. We record the damage on your roof and photograph each part. Any older wear we can see is recorded as well. We are often asked to look into roofs hit by falling trees and new damp or leaks inside, across flat roofs, slate and tile slopes and flashings.

Being in a small place like Gubbion's Green makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned ahead of time. It helps to know where the water appears, in what weather, and what you’ve seen outside, along with any repairs done before. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Tips that help

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Photograph damage inside the house too
  • Read your policy wording on storm damage

You’ll need a roofer’s quote for the repairs. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

Different roofs, different checks

Clay and concrete tiles

Tiles without fixings can move more easily in wind. We note what we can see of how tiles are fixed.

Lead flashings

Flashings with older defects often fail in high winds. Our report separates fresh damage from older wear where we can.

How the survey works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Somewhere as small as Gubbion's Green, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. We check the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Before the survey

  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Book a survey

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Wind, rain and roofs in Gubbion's Green

Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, and plenty of post-war and modern estates besides. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.

Common roof problems in Gubbion's Green

Roofs that were already worn are more likely to suffer in a storm. Nail fatigue, eroded ridge mortar and tired flashings can all fail in high winds. Our report notes both the storm damage and any older wear.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Gutters pulled loose in the wind
  • Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
  • Flat roof edges peeled back
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Great Leighs Primary School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.
