Jaywick questions
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Jaywick?
Often, yes. Jaywick is within about 1 mile of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.
Is Jaywick within the area you cover?
Yes. Jaywick is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Will my insurer pay for an old roof?
Wear and tear is normally excluded from home insurance. We note both storm damage and older defects, so you know what the roof shows. Your insurer decides how its policy applies.
What if my insurer declines the claim?
Raise it with your insurer first. If it isn’t resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it’s applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Storm damage roof report in Jaywick
The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: whether there were storm conditions around the date, whether the damage fits a storm, and whether the storm was the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. If you’ve noticed damage from fallen branches or debris and flashings pulled away from walls or stacks, we can find out what’s behind it.
Houses in smaller places like Jaywick can stand more in the open, where driving rain gets into any gap at a ridge, verge or flashing. If a leak shows only when the wind is in a certain direction, that is a useful clue. Let us know when it happens when you contact us. Gutters and downpipes on the exposed side are worth a look as well.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Wind, rain and roofs in Jaywick
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Jaywick, so storms can arrive with strong gusts off the water. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies, and the insurer decides the claim. In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.
Take an older house close to St Christopher: old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. Landlords with a home close to Clacton-On-Sea station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.
Jaywick is about 2 miles south-west of Clacton-on-Sea, in Essex. We cover Jaywick and the rest of Essex. Across Essex, we cover Jaywick. There is also a page for Chelmsford.
Postcode districts we cover here for storm damage roof reports: CO15 and CO16. That includes homes and businesses on Park Square West, Park Square East and Gorse Way and the roads around them. We also cover Seawick (1 mile west), Rush Green (1 mile north-east), Bocking's Elm (2 miles north), St Osyth (2 miles north-west) and Clacton-on-Sea (2 miles north-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Colchester (12 miles north-west), Harwich (13 miles north-east), Camulodunum (13 miles north-west), Greenstead (11 miles north-west), Wivenhoe (9 miles north-west) and Brightlingsea (5 miles north-west).
What’s near Jaywick
Typical jobs here are in homes near Never Say Die pub, Bishops Park College and Tendring Enterprise Studio School and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is Clacton-On-Sea station, about 2.2 miles north-east of the centre. Open spaces near Jaywick include Colne Point nature reserve.
When to book a survey in Jaywick
Strong winds lift loose or poorly fixed slates and tiles, ridge pieces and flashings. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. People typically call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.
People usually book a survey when they’ve noticed one of these:
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
- Damaged ridges and hips
- Damaged gutters and fascias
If you look after a building such as Sir Martin Frobisher Academy, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Useful tips for Jaywick property owners
Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. Our suggestions:
- Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
- Note the date and time you first saw the damage
- Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
- Ask a roofer for emergency temporary protection if water is coming in
For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. They can use our report to see what needs doing.
Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.
What affects the price in Jaywick
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before you book. These are the things that affect it:
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- Roof area
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.
What we need to know
Before you get in touch, it is useful to have:
- What made you get in touch
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
When you’re ready to go ahead, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day.
How the survey changes by roof type
Slate roofs
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but the nails often fail first. The report records whether slipped slates look like storm damage or older wear.
Lead flashings
Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. The report records the flashing and any damp inside.
What we cannot see
This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- How your policy defines a storm
- Repair costs or quotes for the work
- The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we do, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes about one to two hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a smaller place like Jaywick, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from the ground and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
- We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- You receive the written report with photos.
Before we arrive
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
