Storm damage roof reports in Little Dunmow

What you can safely check yourself

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Little Dunmow

A storm damage roof report is priced from £150. It is a report with photographs, sent by email. It doesn’t price the repairs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for that. The insurer may still send a loss adjuster of its own. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. If you’ve noticed slipped or missing slates or tiles and new damp or leaks inside, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

In a smaller place like Little Dunmow, some roofs face open ground, so wind and driving rain find any weakness in ridges, verges and flashings. A leak that only appears in certain weather often points to an exposed detail. Tell us when it happens when you get in touch. The gutters on the most exposed side can overflow too.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It’s useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

Why it is worth a survey now in Little Dunmow

Leaving storm damage can let water into the loft space and rooms below. That can add to the damage and make it harder to separate from the storm. A roofer should deal with emergency protection quickly. Blocked gutters on homes around Little Dunmow overflow and soak walls. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.

Prices start from £150, with VAT included, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both inc. VAT. We confirm the exact price before you book.

Wind, rain and roofs in Little Dunmow

In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.

If you look after a building such as The Flitch Green Academy, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mary the Virgin, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.

Questions from Little Dunmow

Is Little Dunmow in the area you cover?

Yes, Little Dunmow is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know about the property.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Little Dunmow?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you use drones?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.

How are storm damage reports priced?

Our price is from £150, including VAT. Larger or more complex roofs are quoted for their size. Repair costs aren’t included, so ask a roofer to quote.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Please do not climb onto the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Record the date and any damage inside as well.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

What a storm damage roof report does not cover

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim
  • Estimates of repair costs

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you before booking. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Ridges and hips
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Flashings

How the survey changes by roof type

Ridge and hip tiles

The ridge and hips are among the most exposed parts of a roof. We record any that have lifted, cracked or come away.

Lead flashings

Flashings with older defects often fail in high winds. Our report separates fresh damage from older wear where we can.

What we do, step by step

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Little Dunmow is booked with the forecast in mind: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from ground level and the loft can go ahead in most weather.

  1. You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.
