  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • The outcome of a claim

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

Storm damage roof report in Maynard's Green

After a storm, safety comes first. Take photos from ground level or from windows, and do not climb onto the roof. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. Common reasons to book are roofs hit by falling trees and damaged pots on the stack, on chimney stacks, ridges and hips and gutters and fascias.

Many homes in small places like Maynard's Green face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

What you can safely check yourself

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

What affects the cost of storm damage roof reports

Several things affect the price of a survey:

  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 with VAT included. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.

What we need to know

If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:

  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors

If you are buying, it is useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email whenever suits you.

How it works

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the loft space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Older roofs in small places like Maynard's Green can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photos.

Before the survey

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Keep pets in another room
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Tips from our surveys

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:

  • Don’t go onto the roof to take pictures
  • Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it’s safe to do so
  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in

After the visit, we write up the report with photographs of each area of damage. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.

Store invoices and reports for any roof work. They can help show the roof was looked after.

Is my home in Maynard's Green listed or in a conservation area?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.

Does someone need to be in?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when you book.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where it is applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of clients are satisfied.

Maynard's Green roofs and the weather

Historic houses like Horselunges Manor, about 4.2 miles south, show how far back building in the area around Maynard's Green goes. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Christ Church, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in. Take a building like Maynards Green Community Primary School: tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.
