Need a storm damage roof report in Murcott?

What we are asked to look at in Murcott

Landlords and building managers frequently need a written record after a storm. The report can be shared with owners, tenants or insurers.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings

Shop and office owners around Bicester Avenue may find that water through a ceiling can damage stock and close a sales floor, so the source needs finding fast.

  • What the report includes, and whether it has photos
  • Their drone registration, if they fly one

What to expect from a roof survey

How a storm damage roof report works in Murcott

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from the ground or a window, and never climb up. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Hold on to receipts for anything you pay for. We survey slate and tile slopes, flat roofs and chimney stacks, and people most frequently book us about flashings pulled away from walls or stacks and broken or displaced guttering.

Roofs in small places like Murcott frequently stand in the open, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work around your tenants.

Different roofs, different checks

Slate roofs

In high winds, slates can slip or go, often where nails have rusted. We record which slates have moved and any signs of older nail fatigue.

Chimney stacks

Pots, cowls and aerials on chimneys can be damaged or dislodged in a storm. We record any damage we can see.

When you need someone else

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • How your policy defines a storm

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

Murcott questions

Will you come out to Murcott?

Yes, Murcott is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Murcott?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do I need to be at home?

It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in; we’ll agree the details when booking.

Can you tell me if my claim will be paid?

That is not something we can promise. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause.

How long will you be at the property?

That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. The report is sent afterwards by email.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Start by complaining to the insurer. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that doesn’t resolve it. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

What does a storm damage report cost?

Our reports start from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. The report does not include repair costs.

Checking the roof from ground level

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.

Storm damage roof reports around Murcott

West Oxfordshire’s older buildings often carry Cotswold stone slates, and a few villages in the county keep their thatch. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed. With Boarstall Tower about 2.7 miles east, Murcott sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

For landlords with property near Islip station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

What we do, step by step

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes an hour or two at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere like Murcott needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can be seen safely, including the loft where there’s access.
  3. The damage is recorded with photos, area by area.
  4. We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. The findings are written up with photographs for you to share with your insurer.

Before we arrive

  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
