In a place like Navestock Common, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Storm damage roof report in Navestock Common
After a storm, it is useful to have a clear record of what happened to your roof. Our report shows the damage in photos and says whether it looks like storm damage, wear and tear, or a mix. We are not loss adjusters, and we can’t say whether a claim will be paid. What we give you is an independent record of the roof. We are often asked to look into water coming in after the storm and damage from fallen branches or debris, on chimney stacks, gutters and fascias and flat roofs.
In a village or hamlet like Navestock Common, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, which matters if you’re thinking of an insurance claim. We check everything that’s safely in view and set out what we find. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it is worth finding the cause soon.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Navestock Common roofs and the weather
With Hare Hall about 3.3 miles south, Navestock Common sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.
If you run a business near Romford Shopping Hall, finding where water is getting in quickly keeps disruption down. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Thomas, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.
Navestock Common is about 4 miles north of Romford, in Essex. From houses to flats and shops in Navestock Common, we can survey the roof on a weekday or at the weekend. Across Essex, we cover Navestock Common and the places around it. There is also a page for Chelmsford.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.
We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photographs, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
What we are asked to look at in Navestock Common
Others book after an insurer has queried a claim. You get an independent record of what the roof shows. We cannot say whether the decision will change.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Damaged pots on the stack
- Lead lifted at abutments
- Roofs hit by falling trees
- Slates and tiles blown off the roof
Take a building like Drapers' Academy: water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.
Before you book any roof surveyor
- What they won’t be able to tell you
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- How soon the report will arrive
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
What we look for on each type of roof
Flat roof coverings
Debris blown onto a flat roof can puncture the covering or block outlets. Any damage is recorded with photos.
Lead flashings
Old flashings that were already loose can give way in a storm. We record what looks recent and what looks older.
Navestock Common questions
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Navestock Common?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is Navestock Common in the area you cover?
Yes. We work right across London and South East England, and Navestock Common is part of that. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a few details.
Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?
Each policy has its own definition. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but your policy sets the actual test.
Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?
That is not something we can promise. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.
Will you deal with the insurance company for me?
No. Our report is an independent record for you to use. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.
How many surveys have you done?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years.
What we do, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Around Navestock Common, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
Before the survey
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
