Storm damage roof report in Pell Green: what you get

After a storm, it is useful to have a clear record of what happened to your roof. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We aren’t loss adjusters, and we cannot say whether a claim will be paid. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. We survey flashings, ridges and hips and chimney stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are lead lifted at abutments and lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles.

Many homes in small places like Pell Green face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

What you can safely check yourself

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Older stacks with worn pointing or cracked flaunching are more likely to suffer. We record both the storm damage and the older wear.

Flat roof coverings

Branches and debris can damage flat roofs or block outlets. Any damage is recorded with photos.

Pell Green: your questions answered

Is my home in Pell Green listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Will you come out to Pell Green?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, though we can’t predict the outcome.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only if it’s safe. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?

Emergency temporary protection is a job for a roofer. If it’s safe, take photos before it goes on. Our report then records the roof.

Storm damage roof reports around Pell Green

Wadhurst Castle, about 0.9 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Pell Green. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs, and the county’s older buildings include oast houses and Wealden hall houses. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed.

For an older house near a landmark such as Rehoboth Chapel, leaks on older roofs often start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks. If you own a rental within reach of Wadhurst station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

What we can’t see

In fairness, a roof survey has limits:

  • The outcome of a claim
  • Areas we cannot see safely
  • How your policy defines a storm

Surveys for landlords and agents in Pell Green

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photographs included.

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

When to book a survey in Pell Green

Gusts work at anything on a roof that is loose or exposed. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. People usually call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.

People normally book a survey when they’ve noticed one of these:

  • Holes or cracks caused by debris
  • Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind
  • Damaged gutters and fascias
  • Damaged ridges and hips

Take a building like Wadhurst CofE Primary School: water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • Will the report include photos?
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • Their report turnaround times

What to expect from a roof survey

How the survey works

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit normally takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Somewhere as small as Pell Green, access is frequently the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. We look at the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.
