How a storm damage roof report works in Remenham Hill

A storm damage roof report is priced from £150. It is a written report with photos, sent by email. It doesn’t price the repairs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. The insurer may still send a loss adjuster of its own. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. We survey gutters and fascias, flat roofs and chimney stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are gutters pulled loose in the wind and damage from fallen branches or debris.

Roofs in small places like Remenham Hill often stand in the open, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

The survey, step by step

We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. For a village or hamlet like Remenham Hill, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Remenham Hill

Is Remenham Hill in the area you cover?

Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Remenham Hill is part of that. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a few details.

Will you come out to Remenham Hill?

Yes, Remenham Hill is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

Will my insurer pay for an old roof?

Insurers usually exclude wear and tear. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. The claim decision is your insurer’s.

How experienced are you?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.

How long will you be at the property?

It normally takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. You will then get the report by email.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Raise it with your insurer first. The Financial Ombudsman Service may look at it if that doesn’t resolve it. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Practical tips

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:

  • Photograph damage inside the house too
  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
  • Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
  • Check your policy for how to report damage

If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.

Keep the roof in good order between storms. Fix slipped slates, loose ridges and lifted flashings when you spot them.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Why act early in Remenham Hill

If the damage is partly wear and tear, it is better to know. Our report gives an honest view of both, so there are no surprises later. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both with VAT included. We confirm the price for your roof before booking.

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Remenham Hill?

Storms don’t only affect pitched roofs. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. Our report covers flat and pitched roofs.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Slipped or missing slates or tiles
  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
  • Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind

Take an older house close to Church of St Nicholas: lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

What to check before booking

  • Their insurance cover
  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?

What’s in a roof survey

Wind, rain and roofs in Remenham Hill

Older buildings in west Oxfordshire frequently have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. With Greenlands about 1.7 miles north, Remenham Hill sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

Hotels and guest houses near Remenham Hill cannot easily close rooms for a leak. If you look after a building such as Rupert House School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.
