Roof survey in Remenham Hill
Roof coverings last a long time, but not for ever. Slate frequently lasts a century or more, and tiles commonly half a century, yet nails, battens and underlay often fail first. We tell you which parts are ageing and which are sound. That lets you plan work in good time rather than after a leak. We survey the roof space, chimney stacks and ridges, hips and valleys, and common reasons people get in touch are torn or sagging underlay and ridge tiles that have lifted or moved.
Some older homes in villages like Remenham Hill are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

How the survey works
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. If you have questions on the day, just ask. For a village or hamlet like Remenham Hill, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- You tell us the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
- We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
- Outside, we inspect from ground level, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- Inside, we check the roof space where there’s safe access.
- We email a written report with photographs and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Advice
Do you need a roof survey in Remenham Hill?
A blocked gutter does more harm than it looks. Leaves, moss and silt build up, the gutter overflows and water soaks the walls. Hidden gutters behind parapets and in valleys can send water indoors, particularly near trees.
We are often asked to look at:
- Flashings that have come away from the wall
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists
- Standing water on a flat roof
Living close to Mill Meadows is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Whether the price includes VAT
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- What experience they bring
Different roofs, different checks
Chimney stacks
Damp on a chimney breast inside frequently starts with the stack outside. We check the flashings and mortar for the cause.
Lead flashings and valleys
Lead flashings seal chimneys, walls and abutments. Lifted, split or slipped lead is recorded.

Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
Anyone responsible for a site like Rupert House School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. Historic houses such as Greenlands, about 1.7 miles north, show how far back building around Remenham Hill goes. Older roofs nearby often mix original materials with later repairs, and the survey shows where each one is.

Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Keep the report with your property records
- Gather any paperwork for past roof work
- Mention any damp patches when you book
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
The Premium Survey includes a 12-month follow-up. It shows how the roof has fared over the year.
Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. Look for water marks, damp wood and chinks of light. Photograph anything new.

DIY checks: what’s safe
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Remenham Hill: your questions answered
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Henley-On-Thames station?
Yes, landlords and letting agents book with us as well as owners. Just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know about the building.
Is Remenham Hill within the area you cover?
Yes. Remenham Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.
Will you climb onto the roof?
Where it’s safe, yes. We also inspect from the ground, from windows and vantage points, and from the loft. The Premium Survey adds a drone where it applies.
Can you survey in bad weather?
Light rain does not normally stop a survey. Heavy rain or strong wind can ground a drone and make the roof unsafe, so we’ll agree a new date if the weather is not suitable.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, and it is agreed before booking.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
Do I need to be at home?
It depends on what we need to see. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access.
