Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Streatham Park

The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: whether there were storm conditions around the date, whether the damage fits a storm, and whether the storm was the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. If you’re worried about broken or displaced guttering and flashings pulled away from walls or stacks, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

London’s Victorian and Edwardian roofs have often been repaired many times, so a new leak can be the latest sign of wear rather than a single event. Telling wear from a one-off event matters, because insurers usually exclude wear and tear. That’s as true in Streatham Park as anywhere in London. Photos and a written account give you something specific to show an insurer, a landlord or a roofer.

The report is written in plain words, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photo where possible.

DIY checks: what’s safe

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A clear, independent record helps you explain the damage to your insurer. It sets out what we found and the likely cause, so you are not relying only on your own photos. Behind a London parapet, a blocked gutter can sit full of water without anyone seeing it. When the stain finally shows, the damage underneath is often older than it looks.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report isn’t charged as an extra. Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Wind, rain and roofs in Streatham Park

The wider area around Streatham Park has a long history of building, with Kingswood House about 2.6 miles east. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Close to the centre of London, a great many houses are Victorian or Edwardian terraces, many of them roofed in Welsh slate. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. If your home in Streatham Park is one of them, lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are part of the picture too. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.

For an older house near a landmark such as Parish Church of St Alban, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. If you live near a park such as Streatham Common, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Southside Wandsworth, a leak can close part of a shop or office, so finding the cause quickly matters.

Common questions in Streatham Park

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Streatham Park?

It rarely stops a survey, but it is worth planning. Tell us what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.

Is my home in Streatham Park listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Will my insurer pay for an old roof?

Insurers normally exclude wear and tear. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. Your insurer decides the claim.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you as you book.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Do you cover Streatham Park?

Yes. Streatham Park is part of the area we cover, and the service is the same as everywhere else we work.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Prices for storm damage roof reports in Streatham Park

To price your survey, we check:

  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Height and safe access
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey

There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

What we need to know

We’ll usually ask about:

  • What kind of property and roof it is
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Dates you are working to, like exchange

Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.

What we cannot see

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
  • The outcome of a claim
  • Estimates of repair costs

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Chimney stacks
  • Flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges and hips
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Gutters and fascias

Practical tips

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
  • Don’t go onto the roof to take pictures

After the visit, we write up the report with photos of each area of damage. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Ask a tree specialist about branches over the roof. They can damage the roof in high winds.

The survey, step by step

After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs, emailed to you. As for time on site, it typically takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so a visit in Streatham Park moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. Shared stairs or a basement flat? Tell us who holds the keys.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before the survey

  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • Let us know where we can park nearby

Getting a price

If you are buying, it’s useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. For any other survey, just ring 07833 053749 or email us when you’re ready.
