Storm damage roof reports around Stunts Green

In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs, and the county’s older buildings include oast houses and Wealden hall houses. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed. About 2.9 miles west lies Horselunges Manor, a reminder of how long the area around Stunts Green has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Herstmonceux Church of England Primary School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.

Storm damage roof report in Stunts Green: what you get

Each roof is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: the ground, windows and vantage points, the loft where there is access, and the roof itself where that is safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. If part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. You get a report with photographs to give to your insurer. If you are worried about damaged ridges and hips and flat roof edges peeled back, we can find out what’s behind it, on flashings, chimney stacks and slate and tile slopes alike.

In a village or hamlet like Stunts Green, older cottages and farmhouses often have roofs that have been patched over many years. That makes it hard to tell new damage from old wear, which matters if you are thinking of an insurance claim. The report says what was seen and what it points to. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it is worth finding the cause soon.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

How we price storm damage roof reports

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • The roof’s overall size
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings

Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.

What we need to know

You do not need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to tell us:

  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block

Every survey is priced before it is booked, so you know the cost up front. Our price is from £150, including VAT. For a price for your roof, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Why it is worth a survey now in Stunts Green

It helps to get a record soon after the storm, while the damage is fresh. Further storms and quick fixes can make the picture less clear. Older cottages and farmhouses around Stunts Green can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

Our price is from £150, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, including VAT.

Stunts Green questions

Is Stunts Green within the area you cover?

Yes. Stunts Green is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.

Do you cover Stunts Green?

Yes, Stunts Green is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where it is applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

What if the roof was already worn?

Most policies don’t cover wear and tear. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so it’s clear what we found. How the policy applies is up to your insurer.

Does someone need to be in?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when you book.

Will you deal with the insurance company for me?

No. We aren’t loss adjusters and do not act for you with the insurer. We provide an independent record of the roof, which you can pass to your insurer.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Flashings around stacks can lift in strong winds. We photograph any we find.

Ridge and hip tiles

Water can get in where ridge tiles have moved. Each one is recorded with photos.

Tips from our surveys

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage
  • Do not go onto the roof to take pictures
  • Read your policy wording on storm damage

If a claim is declined and you disagree, the first step is a complaint to the insurer. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Keep the roof in good order between storms. Fix slipped slates, loose ridges and lifted flashings when you spot them.

What a storm damage roof report doesn’t cover

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • How your policy defines a storm

How the survey works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Somewhere like Stunts Green needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before we arrive

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Keep pets in another room
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
