Why it is worth a survey now in Ulting
With an independent report, you have something specific to show your insurer. It records the damage and what seems to have caused it, so you’re not relying only on your own photos. For older village homes like those around Ulting, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

About our storm damage roof report in Ulting
Each roof is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: the ground, windows and vantage points, the loft where there’s access, and the roof itself where that’s safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. We note any part we couldn’t see. You get a photo-illustrated written report to give to your insurer. We survey slate and tile slopes, chimney stacks and gutters and fascias, and people most frequently book us about damaged ridges and hips and damaged pots on the stack.
Being in a small place like Ulting makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. If you have photos of the water coming in, they help as well.
After the visit, you get a written report with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Useful tips for Ulting property owners
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- File receipts for anything you pay for
- Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
- Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
- Keep a note of the date of the storm
After the visit, we write up the report with photos of each area of damage. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.
Honest limits
It is useful to know what a survey will not do before booking:
- The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
- How your policy defines a storm
- Areas we cannot see safely
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.
Roofs we survey in Ulting
- Slate and tile slopes
- Gutters and fascias
- Flashings
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs
- Ridges and hips
Different roofs, different checks
Clay and concrete tiles
A missing tile lets rain reach the underlay. Each gap is recorded with a photo.
Lead flashings
Old flashings that were already loose can give way in a storm. Our report separates fresh damage from older wear where we can.
The survey, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit normally takes an hour or two at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Ulting can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
- We view the roof from wherever it can be seen safely, including the loft where there is access.
- We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
- The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
- You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

FAQs for Ulting
Is Ulting within the area you cover?
Yes, Ulting is covered. We work right across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Ulting, take more of a battering?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, while strong wind lifts anything already loose.
How long will you be at the property?
Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.
How should I record storm damage myself?
Safely, from the ground or a window. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. With binoculars, you can see a lot from the ground and we will inspect the rest from safe positions.
How experienced are you?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
Do you look in the loft space?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
What a storm damage roof report looks like in Ulting
Ulting is within about 5 miles of the coast, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Strong wind lifts anything already loose, and driving rain gets in wherever it can. Older buildings in Essex frequently have clay tiles and weatherboarding, and plenty of post-war and modern estates besides. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
Danbury Place lies about 3.5 miles south-west, so building around Ulting goes back a long way. Older roofs in the area may have lead flashings, valleys and gutters that have been patched many times. Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.
