Tips from our surveys

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Look at what your policy says about wear and tear
  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage

After the visit, we write up the report with photos of each area of damage. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Wembley Park

Our storm damage report gives you an independent, written record of how a storm has affected your roof. It sets out what is damaged, with photographs, and what we think the likely cause is. You can then give it to your insurer with your claim. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We’re not loss adjusters, and we cannot tell you whether a claim will succeed. If you’ve noticed lead lifted at abutments and roofs hit by falling trees, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Many London homes are well over a century old and their roofs have been patched more than once. Insurers typically exclude wear and tear, so it is useful to know whether damage is old or new. A careful look in Wembley Park tells the two apart where the evidence allows. A written record with photographs helps you explain what was found to whoever deals with it next.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

The survey, step by step

When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where it applies. The survey typically takes between one and two hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In Wembley Park, visits are available on weekdays and at weekends. It helps if you can point us to a visitor permit or a nearby bay, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. A back bedroom window can be the best vantage point for a rear addition, so we may ask to use one.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before we arrive

  • Check we can get to the back of the property
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

For landlords and managing agents

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.

Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

What this survey cannot tell you

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Estimates of repair costs
  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • The outcome of a claim

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

Wembley Park: your questions answered

Can parking be tricky for a visit in Wembley Park?

Parking in Wembley Park, as in most of London, takes a little planning: a visitor permit or a nearby bay makes the day run more smoothly.

Do you cover Wembley Park?

Yes, Wembley Park is within the area we cover. Our area covers London and South East England. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. Our report gives you an independent record of the roof, but we cannot say how it will turn out.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it’s applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

It depends on your policy. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Check your policy wording.

Roof by roof

Slate roofs

Broken slates and slates that have slid out of place are common after a storm. Each area is photographed and described.

Lead flashings

Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. We note where this has happened and any damp inside.

What you can safely check yourself

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

Leaks and storm damage in Wembley Park

The wider area around Wembley Park has a long history of building, with Pitzhanger Manor about 3.8 miles south. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. If your home in Wembley Park is one of them, bay roofs, hips and later dormers each have their own details. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.

Homes near green spaces such as St. Raphael's Edible Garden can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near London Designer Outlet, a leak can close part of a shop or office, so finding the cause quickly matters. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Augustine, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.
