Storm damage roof report in Westdean

What counts as a storm depends on your policy, though many use gusts of about 55 mph. Your policy document sets out its own definition. Whether the weather met it is for your insurer. Our part is recording the damage to your roof and its likely cause. The report includes photos of each area of damage, and you decide what to send. The claim decision rests with your insurer. We survey ridges and hips, gutters and fascias and slate and tile slopes, and people most often book us about damage from fallen branches or debris and torn or lifted flat roof coverings.

Roofs in small places like Westdean often stand in the open, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Honest limits

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • Estimates of repair costs
  • Areas we cannot see safely

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will recommend the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Gutters and fascias
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings

Checking the roof from ground level

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Leaks and storm damage in Westdean

Westdean lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and being near the sea means more wind and salt than a roof inland would face. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain finds any gap they leave, and salt air slowly wears metal fixings. Older houses across Sussex frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs, and the county’s older buildings include oast houses and Wealden hall houses. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

If you live near a park such as Seaford Head Nature Reserve, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. Historic houses like Alfriston Clergy House, about 2 miles north, show how far back building around Westdean goes. Older roofs around here can leak at old repairs as readily as at original details.

Westdean is about 2 miles east of Seaford, in East Sussex. We provide storm damage roof reports for householders, landlords and businesses in Westdean. We cover towns and villages across East Sussex, from the larger towns to small villages. There is also a page for Brighton.

The survey, step by step

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. All told, expect between one and two hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. Rural addresses near Westdean can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. You let us know when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there’s access.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
  5. The findings are written up with photographs for you to share with your insurer.

Advice

What a survey costs

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium

Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Helping us price your survey

Some details help us point you to the right survey and price. When you get in touch, it is useful to mention:

  • Anything about access we should know
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • When you need the report by
  • The address and postcode of the property

Not sure which survey you need? It’s easiest to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.

FAQs for Westdean

Is the coastal weather around Westdean hard on roofs?

Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there is more wind, and more salt in the air. Exposed details such as ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch.

How do I find out if my home in Westdean is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

What’s the best way to book?

It is easiest to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we will recommend the right survey. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you when booking.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Stay off the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. The report sets out what needs attention now and what can wait.

Signs you need a storm damage roof report in Westdean

Insurers often want evidence of what has been damaged and why. An independent report gives you a clear record to send. The decision still rests with the insurer.

It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Damage from fallen branches or debris
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
  • Water coming in after the storm
  • Slates and tiles blown off the roof

If you look after a building such as Ladycross School, a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside.
