Roof by roof

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Felt and asphalt sit tight to the layers below, which often helps the camera pick up differences. We confirm any patterns with moisture readings.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Water frequently gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. Thermal imaging can help show damp patterns around them.

About our thermal roof survey in Brimpton Common

Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. It also includes a drone inspection where it applies, a structural analysis and a same-day report. There’s an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. We survey flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and loft conversions, and people most often book us about leaks that are hard to trace and wet insulation beneath the membrane.

In a village or hamlet like Brimpton Common, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What we cannot see

It helps to know what a survey won’t do before you book:

  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • A structural engineer’s assessment

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Commercial roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Flat roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Pitched roof slopes

Checking the roof from the ground

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in.

Thermal roof surveys in Brimpton Common: local notes

Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Nicholas, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. Anyone responsible for a site like The Hurst School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Brimpton Common

We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as householders. A photo-illustrated written report gives you a clear record of the roof, useful for planning maintenance.

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed ahead of time. Surveys run on any day of the week, which helps when tenants work during the week.

How it works

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It typically takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Rural addresses near Brimpton Common can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Preparing for the visit

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Brimpton Common

How do I find out if my home in Brimpton Common is listed?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Do you cover Brimpton Common?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Brimpton Common as anywhere else.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, which we then check with moisture readings.

Do I need to be at home?

It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in.

How much does a thermal roof survey cost?

Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so improvements can go where they’re needed. Older cottages and farmhouses around Brimpton Common can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.
