Thermal roof survey in Chigwell Row

Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. It also includes a drone inspection where it applies, a structural analysis and a same-day report. There is an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. We survey loft conversions, flat roofs and insulated roof spaces, and people most frequently book us about moisture around outlets and upstands and stains that keep coming back.

Villages like Chigwell Row often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

What this survey cannot tell you

We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flat roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Commercial roofs

How the survey changes by roof type

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Thermal images of a pitched roof can still show heat loss patterns and some damp areas. The report explains what the images can tell you and what they cannot.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We look at cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there’s a pattern around them.

Chigwell Row: your questions answered

Are there drone restrictions around Chigwell Row?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Chigwell Row is about 3 miles from Stapleford Aerodrome, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying, and the rest of the survey does not depend on the drone.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Chigwell Row?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

How long is the visit?

Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Can a thermal camera see water?

Not directly. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?

It can be useful, though pitched roofs are typically harder to read. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.

Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?

Our Premium Survey, from £400, includes thermal imaging. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.

The survey, step by step

After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, most surveys take about 1–2 hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Around Chigwell Row, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
  2. The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

Before we arrive

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Chigwell Row

Some defects simply cannot be seen with the eye. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are often invisible from outside. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Damp around chimneys and parapets
  • Damp that repairs haven’t cured
  • Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
  • Leaks far from where the stain appears

Take a building like Chigwell Row Infant School: big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What they will not be able to tell you
  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA

What a roof survey includes

Leave it or get it looked at?

Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is often to open up the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. Older cottages and farmhouses around Chigwell Row can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Prices start from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.
