Thermal Roof Survey in Cripp's Corner
Thermal roof surveys in Cripp's Corner from an independent, experienced roof surveyor. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
- Gaps in loft insulation
- Cold areas below the roof
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
Thermal roof survey in Cripp's Corner: what you get
Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves frequently show up as temperature differences. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. It isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. We’re often asked to look into possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering and damp that repairs haven’t cured, on flat roofs, commercial roofs and pitched roof slopes.
Somewhere as small as Cripp's Corner, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

What we are asked to look at in Cripp's Corner
Buyers sometimes want more than a visual look at the roof. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report, which helps when timescales are tight.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
For site and facilities teams at buildings like Staplecross Methodist Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
What to check before booking
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
- Their report turnaround times
- Which limits apply to the survey
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Landlords and letting agents in Cripp's Corner book surveys as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.
FAQs for Cripp's Corner
Is Cripp's Corner within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Cripp's Corner?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?
It can help, but the results are often less clear than on a flat roof. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we also look from the loft where it is safe.
How experienced are you?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It often helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It is used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone cannot prove a leak.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.

What we do, step by step
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes between one and two hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a small place like Cripp's Corner, access is normally the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

DIY checks: what’s safe
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Flying and imaging in Cripp's Corner
Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Durhamford Manor, about 1.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Cripp's Corner. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
For an older house near a landmark such as St Marks Staplecross, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.
