How a thermal roof survey works in Funtington
Thermal imaging is a useful tool, but it has limits. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. We back up the images with moisture readings and a careful look at the roof. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding can’t be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. If you’ve noticed damp patches with no obvious cause and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Older buildings in small places like Funtington may be listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

For landlords and managing agents
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Larger roofs take longer.
Letting agents and landlords in Funtington book surveys as well as householders. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Once insulation under a membrane is wet, it tends to stay wet. Over time, it insulates less well and can harm the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. In a small place like Funtington, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

How the survey works
Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Cottages and farmhouses around Funtington often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

What you can safely check yourself
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book.
Different roofs, different checks
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Because these membranes are thin, patterns from below frequently show. Shiny surfaces can reflect heat, so we take care reading the images.
Loft insulation
Heat loss shows most clearly when it is warm inside and colder outside. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.
Questions from Funtington
Is my home in Funtington listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Will you come out to Funtington?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?
It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. It’s used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone cannot prove a leak.
Airspace, weather and Funtington roofs
The coast is about 4 miles or less from Funtington, and wind off the sea can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
Take a building like Funtington Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. West Dean House lies about 4.6 miles north-east, so building around Funtington goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself. For an older house near a landmark such as The Parish Church of St Mary, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Funtington is about 4 miles north-west of Chichester, in West Sussex. Whether the building in Funtington is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Across West Sussex, we cover Funtington. Our Portsmouth page covers surveys nearby.

We also work in nearby towns like Bognor Regis (9 miles south-east), Chichester (4 miles south-east), Selsey (10 miles south), Littlehampton (15 miles east), Emsworth (4 miles west) and Portfield (5 miles south-east).

When you need someone else
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
- A formal energy assessment
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
