Thermal roof surveys in Goddard's Green: local notes

If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from ground level, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Garland Junior School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once. Historic houses such as Stratfield Saye House, about 3.7 miles south-east, show how far back building around Goddard's Green goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself.

Goddard's Green is about 5 miles south-west of Reading, in West Berkshire. From houses to flats and shops in Goddard's Green, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Goddard's Green is one of the towns and villages in West Berkshire where we work for thermal roof surveys.

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Goddard's Green

A thermal survey is not a quick fix for every roof problem. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. We back up the images with moisture readings and a careful look at the roof. The report is clear about what the images show and what they don’t. Where something cannot be confirmed, we say what would help next. We survey flat roofs, loft conversions and commercial roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are thin or uneven insulation in the roof and damp around chimneys and parapets.

Villages like Goddard's Green often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly.

Can I check my roof myself?

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

Honest limits

It is useful to know what a survey won’t do before you book:

  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
  • Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we look at

  • Loft conversions
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Commercial roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Flat roofs

Goddard's Green questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Goddard's Green?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Will you come out to Goddard's Green?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.

Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.

Will I get photos?

Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.

Are you insured?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

What we look for on each type of roof

Parapets, valleys and junctions

When valley or parapet gutters overflow, water can get into walls and ceilings. Thermal images, checked with moisture readings, can help trace it.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Felt and asphalt sit tight to the layers below, which frequently helps the camera pick up differences. We confirm any patterns with moisture readings.

Why it is worth a survey now in Goddard's Green

Before replacing a large flat roof, it helps to know how much of it is actually wet. Thermal imaging, checked with moisture readings, gives a clearer picture before you commit. Older cottages and farmhouses around Goddard's Green can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. The price is always agreed first.

Why us?

  • Surveys seven days a week
  • PI and public liability insurance
  • Plain-English reports with photos
  • Thermal imaging and drones used where they help

What we do, step by step

The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It normally takes between one and two hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere like Goddard's Green needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

How to prepare

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey

How to book
