Thermal roof surveys in Great Stambridge

How it works

We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey normally takes an hour or two for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere as small as Great Stambridge, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
  3. Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
  5. We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Tell us about parking before the day
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Advice

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Great Stambridge

Your report sets out the thermal images alongside ordinary photographs, so it’s easy to see which part of the roof each one shows. We explain what each pattern may mean, what the moisture readings found and what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day. You can talk the findings through with us at the in-person consultation. There is a 12-month follow-up as well. If you’ve noticed damp that repairs haven’t cured and water that travels before it shows, we can find out what’s behind it.

In a small place like Great Stambridge, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Thermal roof surveys around Great Stambridge

Great Stambridge lies within about 5 miles of the sea, and coastal wind can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, and plenty of post-war and modern estates besides. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

Southchurch Hall, about 3.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Great Stambridge. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary and All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Great Stambridge: your questions answered

Is drone flying allowed in Great Stambridge?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. London Southend Airport is about 3 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and the rest of the survey does not depend on the drone.

Is my home in Great Stambridge listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

What conditions are best for thermal imaging?

The results depend on the weather. A dry surface, little wind and a sunny spell beforehand help most. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.

How soon will I get the report?

That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.

How many surveys have you done?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

Does the report include photos?

Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.

Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?

It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings because the camera cannot confirm water on its own.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Wet insulation under a flat roof doesn’t dry out on its own while the covering stays on. Over time, it insulates less well and can harm the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. In a place like Great Stambridge, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Prices start from £150, inc. VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both including VAT. We confirm the price for your survey before booking.

Common roof problems in Great Stambridge

Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. A leak may start well away from where the stain appears. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.

Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed something like this:

  • Wet insulation beneath the membrane
  • Water that travels before it shows
  • Damp around roof outlets and upstands
  • Damp that repairs haven’t cured

If you look after a building such as Stambridge Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price

What a good roof survey covers

Before and after the survey

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Keep the report to compare against after any repair

Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.

Deal with small splits and lifted seams promptly. Water that gets under a covering can spread a long way before it shows.

How the survey changes by roof type

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

These coverings sit directly on the layers beneath, so temperature differences frequently show through. Any patterns are checked with moisture readings.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Water frequently gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. Thermal imaging can help show damp patterns around them.

What this survey can’t tell you

It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • Proving moisture from the images alone
  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you before you book. What our survey covers.
