Thermal roof surveys near Heronsgate

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Heronsgate

A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp isn’t obvious. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. We survey ceilings below the roof, commercial roofs and flat roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are stains that keep coming back and patches of heat loss across the roof.

Some older homes in villages like Heronsgate are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

How it works

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. Most visits take between one and two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. For a village or hamlet like Heronsgate, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
  5. We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

Advice

Should I look at the roof myself first?

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Heronsgate

Some owners book because the rooms under the roof feel cold. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when there’s a clear difference between inside and outside.

Typical things we’re asked to look at include:

  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
  • Stains that keep coming back
  • Missing or slipped insulation

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Chorleywood Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • Their insurance cover
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. Our suggestions:

  • Check outlets after heavy rain
  • Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
  • Photograph damp patches with the date
  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing

Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, so you can go through the images with us. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.

Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.

Heronsgate: your questions answered

Do you carry out roof surveys in Heronsgate?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Heronsgate as anywhere else.

Will you come out to Heronsgate?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?

It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.

Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.

What conditions are best for thermal imaging?

The results depend on the weather. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Are you insured?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Heronsgate

In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St John, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. Chenies Manor House lies about 2.4 miles north, so building around Heronsgate goes back a long way. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.

Heronsgate is about 1 mile south-west of Chorleywood, in Hertfordshire. Wherever you are in Heronsgate, we can come and survey your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Our Hertfordshire coverage includes Heronsgate and the places around it. You can also see our page for London.

When you need someone else

It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:

  • Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
  • Confirming water without moisture readings
  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up

If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Commercial roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Flat roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Loft conversions

Why get it checked now?

Trapped water can harm decks, timbers and ceilings the longer it stays. Surveying sooner gives you more choice about what to do. Around Heronsgate, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.
