Thermal roof survey in Heybridge: what you get

A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. It’s important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so findings are checked with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. We survey commercial roofs, insulated roof spaces and ceilings below the roof, and the problems we are asked to look at most are water getting in at parapets and stacks and patches of heat loss across the roof.

Even in a smaller place like Heybridge, there may be airfields or restrictions nearby, so every drone flight starts with a check of the Drone Safety Map. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.

The report doesn’t just list problems. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Airspace, weather and Heybridge roofs

Heybridge is within about 2 miles of the coast. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St Andrew, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Heybridge, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it pays to find faults before guests do. Anyone responsible for a site like Heybridge Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Heybridge is about 1 mile north of Maldon, in Essex. Anywhere in Heybridge, we can come and survey your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Heybridge is one of the places in Essex we cover for thermal roof surveys. For surveys nearby, see our Chelmsford page.

Practical tips

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:

  • Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
  • Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather
  • Do not switch the heating off before the visit

Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it is easy to find each area on the roof.

Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.

Heybridge: your questions answered

Do you carry out roof surveys in Heybridge?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Heybridge as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Will you come out to Heybridge?

Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?

It can show temperature patterns that point to missing or thin insulation. It shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. We look from the loft as well, where there is safe access.

When does the report arrive?

That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

It records surface temperature across the roof. Differences can suggest wet areas, missing insulation or heat loss, and we check them with moisture readings.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

The camera doesn’t see water itself. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, and moisture readings are used to check it.

How we price thermal roof surveys

Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:

  • The roof’s overall size
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You will know the figure before booking.

Booking your survey

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • When you need the report by
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Anything about access we should know

To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or email us and tell us the address and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price before booking.

The survey, step by step

Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit normally takes about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Homes around Heybridge frequently have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Mention any side of the property we cannot get to. Inside, the loft is looked at where it can be reached safely.

  1. You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Before we arrive

  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

What this survey can’t tell you

It helps to know what a survey will not do before booking:

  • An energy rating for the building
  • The condition of timbers we cannot see
  • Confirming water without moisture readings

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Flat roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Commercial roofs

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

What you can safely check yourself

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
