Thermal roof survey in Hungerford: what you get

Thermal imaging is a useful tool, but it has limits. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. That’s why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. The report is clear about what the images show and what they don’t. If a finding cannot be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. We survey flat roofs, pitched roof slopes and insulated roof spaces, and people most often book us about cold areas below the roof and damp patches with no obvious cause.

Villages like Hungerford often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Checking the roof from ground level

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book and it will help the survey.

FAQs for Hungerford

Do you cover smaller places like Hungerford?

Yes. Hungerford is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.

How do I find out if my home in Hungerford is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. It shows most clearly when it is warm inside and cold outside. We look from the loft as well, where there is safe access.

Does the report include photos?

Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

Which survey includes thermal imaging?

It is part of the Premium Survey, from £400. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.

Drones, thermal imaging and Hungerford roofs

In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

Anyone responsible for a site like Waltham St Lawrence Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Whatever the street in Hungerford, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early.

Tips that help

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:

  • Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
  • Heat the home normally on the days before
  • Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting

We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.

Deal with small splits and lifted seams promptly. Once water gets under a membrane, it can travel far before it appears inside.

Why get it checked now?

Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is often to open up the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

How it works

The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the roof as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit usually takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere like Hungerford needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.

  1. We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
  3. Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
  5. The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.

Before the survey

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Let us know about parking before the day

When you need someone else

Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Flat roofs
  • Commercial roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Pitched roof slopes

How the survey changes by roof type

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. We explain what can and can’t be read from them.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Felt and asphalt roofs frequently show wet areas as patches that differ from the rest. Moisture readings are used to check them.
