DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Thermal roof survey in Icklesham: what you get

Thermal imaging is part of our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. It also includes a drone inspection where applicable, a structural analysis and a same-day report. There is an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. To book, just phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and what you’ve noticed. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. We survey flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and commercial roofs, and people most often book us about cold areas below the roof and areas of a flat roof that may hold water.

In a village or hamlet like Icklesham, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, each with a short note and a photo. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Drones, thermal imaging and Icklesham roofs

Icklesham lies within about 3 miles of the sea, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

Take an older house close to The Parish Church of St Nicholas: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Icklesham Church of England Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. Historic houses like Lamb House, about 3.7 miles north-east, show how far back building around Icklesham goes. For older roofs nearby, a look from the air or with a thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

Icklesham is about 6 miles north-east of Hastings, in East Sussex. Roofs in Icklesham get the same thorough look as anywhere else in East Sussex. Icklesham is one of the towns and villages in East Sussex we cover. You can also see our page for Maidstone.

Icklesham questions

Is Icklesham in the area you cover?

Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, and Icklesham is part of that. You can ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details.

How do I find out if my home in Icklesham is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

What’s the best way to book?

Just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.

How many surveys have you done?

We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.

Which survey includes thermal imaging?

It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a report on the same day.

Do I need to be at home?

It depends on what we need to see. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

Roof by roof

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. The camera can help show where to look.

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

On big single-ply roofs, the camera helps show where to take readings. That makes the survey more focused.

The survey, step by step

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Around Icklesham, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

Before the survey

  • Tell us where we can park nearby
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Useful tips for Icklesham property owners

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • File the images with your roof records
  • Check from ground level or a window, never by climbing
  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
  • Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings

The report explains the conditions on the day and how they affected the images. It helps you judge how firm each finding is.

Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.

What we can’t see

Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • An energy rating for the building
  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Flat roofs
  • Commercial roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Loft conversions
  • Insulated roof spaces

How we price thermal roof surveys

Survey packages start from £150, inc. VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • House, block, shop or office
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Height and safe access

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.

What we need to know

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It is enough to tell us:

  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • The kind of building and roof involved

Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from the ground or a window, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
