Flying and imaging in Little Hungerford
With Shaw House about 4.1 miles south-west, Little Hungerford sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.
Take a building like Hermitage Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. The streets around a church such as Church of St Bartholomew are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

How a thermal roof survey works in Little Hungerford
Wet insulation under a flat roof covering holds heat for longer than dry. That means a wet area can show up as a different temperature from the rest of the roof. It helps us see how far water may have spread under the covering, which is hard to judge by eye. Moisture readings are then used to check what the camera suggests. Common reasons to book are damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and stains that keep coming back, across flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and pitched roof slopes.
In a village or hamlet like Little Hungerford, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
After the visit, you get a report with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Why get it checked now?
Wet insulation under a flat roof does not dry out on its own while the covering stays on. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.

Take a look at what a roof survey costs and what we found on two real jobs.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
How the survey changes by roof type
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Single-ply PVC, TPO and EPDM roofs are frequently laid over insulation boards. Wet boards can show as temperature differences on the images.
Loft insulation
The difference is clearest when the home is heated and it’s cold out. Our report notes how the conditions affected the images.
Practical tips
You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Make sure the loft can be reached safely
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photos and moisture readings into one report. We explain what each image may mean, with our recommendations. Premium reports are sent the same day.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.
How it works
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes an hour or two at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. For a village or hamlet like Little Hungerford, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Before we arrive
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice
Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Little Hungerford
Is my home in Little Hungerford listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Do you carry out roof surveys in Little Hungerford?
Yes. We work right across London and the South East, and Little Hungerford is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the property.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
How do I book a survey in Little Hungerford?
The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Let us know the address and a little about the roof, and we will take it from there. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Will I get photos?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
How long does the survey take?
It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. The written report follows by email.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it applies and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.

What this survey can’t tell you
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
- A formal energy assessment
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.
