Hermitage Thermal Roof Survey
Thermal roof surveys in Hermitage and the rest of West Berkshire. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.
- Stains that keep coming back
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
Tips that help
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Leave the roof to people with safe access
- Talk to us about the weather when booking
Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it’s easy to find each area on the roof.
Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Gaps often appear after work in the loft.
Thermal roof survey in Hermitage: what you get
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. The camera doesn’t see water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. We’re often asked to look into areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and wet areas near outlets and upstands, on pitched roof slopes, insulated roof spaces and ceilings below the roof.
Somewhere as small as Hermitage, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

What this survey can’t tell you
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we check
- Commercial roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
- Pitched roof slopes
- Insulated roof spaces
- Flat roofs
The survey, step by step
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes between one and two hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. Older roofs in small places like Hermitage can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Before the survey
- Let us know about parking near the property
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at

Common questions in Hermitage
How do I find out if my home in Hermitage is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is Hermitage within the area you cover?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it doesn’t include calculations. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.
Will thermal imaging find my leak?
It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings because the camera cannot confirm water on its own.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
Roof by roof
Loft insulation
The difference is clearest when the home is heated and it’s cold out. Our report notes how the conditions affected the images.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
On felt and asphalt flat roofs, wet insulation can show as a temperature difference across the surface. We check those patches with moisture readings.
Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Hermitage
After a repair, some owners want to know whether the roof has dried out. Thermal images and moisture readings can suggest whether moisture is still trapped when the conditions on the day are suitable.
Look out for signs like these:
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Stains that keep coming back
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
- Missing or slipped insulation
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Hermitage Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
What to check before booking
- What experience they bring
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
Thermal roof surveys around Hermitage
If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.
Historic houses such as Shaw House, about 3.4 miles south-west, show how far back building around Hermitage goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. The streets around a church such as Holy Trinity are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
Hermitage is about 4 miles north of Thatcham, in West Berkshire. Wherever you are in Hermitage, we can carry out thermal roof surveys at your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. Across West Berkshire, we cover Hermitage. We also survey roofs in Reading.
