Common roof problems in Long Marston
Flat roofs that have leaked for a while can have wet insulation under the covering. Owners want to know how far it has spread before deciding what to do. Thermal images and moisture readings together can show the likely extent.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Missing or slipped insulation
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Long Marston VA Church of England Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Choosing a roof surveyor

- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Is VAT included in the price?

How a thermal roof survey works in Long Marston
On a flat roof, wet insulation holds heat longer than dry insulation. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. It helps us see how far water may have spread under the covering, something you cannot typically tell from the surface. We then check those areas with moisture readings. If you’ve noticed damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a small place like Long Marston, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How the survey works
We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Rural addresses near Long Marston can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
Booking a survey
Most bookings start with a short call: call 07833 053749 or email us, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.

Pitched slate and tile roofs
Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. The report explains what the images can tell you and what they cannot.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Cracks in GRP can let water into the boards beneath. We combine a visual check of cracks with the thermal images around them.
Long Marston: your questions answered
Is my home in Long Marston listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Is Long Marston within the area you cover?
Yes, Long Marston is covered. We survey roofs across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
Will thermal imaging find my leak?
Thermal imaging can help, alongside other checks. The results depend on conditions on the day. If the source can’t be confirmed, we’ll say what could help next, such as electronic leak detection.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?
Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there’s safe access.
How do I book a survey in Long Marston?

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

What you can safely check yourself
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Drones, thermal imaging and Long Marston roofs
About 4.3 miles north lies Ascott House, a reminder of how long the area around Long Marston has been built on. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
Take an older house close to Church of All Saints (Church of England): steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
