Thermal imaging roof survey in Northaw, Hertfordshire
Thermal roof surveys in Northaw and the rest of Hertfordshire. We survey seven days a week.
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
What happens if roof problems are left?
Thermal images can suggest the extent of wet areas without cutting into the roof. That helps you and your roofer decide what really needs replacing. Older and listed buildings around Northaw may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.

Thermal roof survey in Northaw
A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We survey pitched roof slopes, flat roofs and commercial roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are patches of heat loss across the roof and leaks far from where the stain appears.
In a small place like Northaw, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when booking and we will plan the survey around it.
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.
When to book a survey in Northaw
Some defects simply cannot be seen with the eye. Trapped moisture, missing insulation and hidden heat loss are three examples. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Cold areas below the roof
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Northaw Church of England Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
What to check before booking
- Whether you get a written report with photos
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
Tips from our surveys
Getting the most from a thermal roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
Where a pattern can’t be confirmed, the report says what could help, such as electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.
Have small defects in the covering fixed early. Once water gets under a membrane, it can travel far before it appears inside.
The survey, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Older roofs in small places like Northaw can have low, tight loft spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
How to prepare
- Tell us about parking before the day
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Northaw questions
Is Northaw in the area you cover?
Yes, Northaw is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Do you cover smaller places like Northaw?
Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
It’s part of the Premium Survey, from £400. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Surveys run seven days a week. To arrange a date, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Will thermal imaging find my leak?
It’s a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. The results depend on conditions on the day. Where it cannot be pinned down, the report suggests a next step, such as electronic leak detection.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.
What else we do in Northaw
What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
We confirm the price for the job before you book. These are the things that affect it:
- House, block, shop or office
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- The shape of the roof and its details
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Prices start from £400, including VAT.
Getting in touch
Before you get in touch, it is useful to have:
- The property’s address and postcode
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
Unsure which package suits your roof? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will explain the options and the price.
Drones, thermal imaging and Northaw roofs
The wider area around Northaw has a long history of building, with Wyllyotts Manor about 2.1 miles west. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Thomas A Becket, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.
