Thermal roof surveys in Plumpton Green

About our thermal roof survey in Plumpton Green

What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. A sunny day before the survey, a dry roof surface and little wind all help. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We talk through the forecast as you book, and our report notes the conditions and how they affected what we saw. We survey ceilings below the roof, flat roofs and commercial roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and water that travels before it shows.

Somewhere as small as Plumpton Green, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Flying and imaging in Plumpton Green

If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Older houses across Sussex frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

Take a building like Plumpton Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you live in an older home near All Saints, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

How we price thermal roof surveys

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building
  • Height and safe access
  • The size of the roof

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.

Booking your survey

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It is useful to include:

  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • Dates you are working to, such as exchange
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To get started, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
  • Proving moisture from the images alone

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll suggest the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

Roof by roof

Parapets, valleys and junctions

When valley or parapet gutters overflow, water can get into walls and ceilings. We use the camera and moisture readings to help follow it.

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

Single-ply PVC, TPO and EPDM roofs are often laid over insulation boards. Wet boards can show as temperature differences on the images.

Why get it checked now?

Repeated repairs that don’t stop a leak are a sign the source hasn’t been traced. Thermal imaging with moisture readings can help narrow it down, instead of trying repair after repair. For an older or listed building in a place like Plumpton Green, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before booking.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Plumpton Green

Do you cover Plumpton Green?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is my home in Plumpton Green listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do you use drones?

Yes, where it’s applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?

It can help, but the results are frequently less clear than on a flat roof. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.

How long will you be at the property?

Most surveys take about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. The report follows by email.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when you book.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found.

The survey, step by step

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Plumpton Green often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Preparing for the visit

  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
