Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Streat
How do I find out if my home in Streat is listed?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you carry out roof surveys in Streat?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Streat is part of that. You can ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and cannot tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
Thermal imaging can help, alongside other checks. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. Where it can’t be pinned down, the report suggests a next step, such as electronic leak detection.
How long does the survey take?
Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. The written report follows by email.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
Thermal roof survey in Streat: what you get
Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. It’s important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. We survey flat roofs, insulated roof spaces and ceilings below the roof, and people most often book us about missing or slipped insulation and ceilings that feel colder in places.
Some older homes in villages like Streat are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Drones, thermal imaging and Streat roofs
An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Streat Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

What happens if roof problems are left?
Once insulation under a membrane is wet, it tends to stay wet. Over time, it insulates less well and can harm the deck. Finding them early can mean a smaller job. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.

What we are asked to look at in Streat
Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when there is a clear difference between inside and outside.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
If you look after a building such as Plumpton Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

What happens on the day
We do not take risks to get a closer look. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Around Streat, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Before the survey
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Keep pets in another room
