Thermal roof survey in Plumpton: what you get

Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. The camera doesn’t see water itself, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The report also notes the conditions on the day, since they affect what the camera can show. We survey insulated roof spaces, ceilings below the roof and commercial roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are damp around roof outlets and upstands and heat escaping through the roof.

Somewhere as small as Plumpton, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned in advance. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

What this survey can’t tell you

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
  • An energy rating for the building

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Loft conversions
  • Commercial roofs
  • Flat roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Pitched roof slopes

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Plumpton?

Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Trapped moisture, missing insulation and hidden heat loss are three examples. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
  • Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
  • Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
  • Wet areas near outlets and upstands

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near The Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What experience they bring
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • Their insurance cover

What a good roof survey covers

Can I check my roof myself?

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

How the survey works

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take about one to two hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. Somewhere as small as Plumpton, access is frequently the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
  5. You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Let us know about parking before the day
  • Keep pets in another room
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Tips that help

Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. A few suggestions:

  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn

If the images suggest moisture that can’t be confirmed, we’ll say what would help next, like electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.

Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof, when the conditions are suitable.
