Thermal roof survey in Pound Hill: what you get

Thermal imaging is a useful tool, but it has limits. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. We back up the images with moisture readings and a careful look at the roof. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. Where something can’t be confirmed, we say what would help next. We survey insulated roof spaces, pitched roof slopes and loft conversions, and common reasons people get in touch are water getting in at parapets and stacks and heat escaping through the roof.

Around Pound Hill, a good many roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. The parts you cannot see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. The forecast decides the day. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from the ground.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Drones, thermal imaging and Pound Hill roofs

Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Pound Hill is part of Crawley, one of the post-war new towns. Many homes in the new towns date from the post-war decades, with concrete interlocking tiles, low-pitched roofs and flat-roofed garages and porches. Low pitches and flat-roofed additions are hard to see from the ground, so aerial and thermal views add detail.

Historic houses such as Gravetye Manor, about 4.6 miles south-east, show how far back building around Pound Hill goes. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St Barnabas', tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Pound Hill is about 2 miles north-east of Crawley, in West Sussex. Pound Hill is one of many places we visit across West Sussex. Our West Sussex coverage includes Pound Hill and the places around it.

How the survey changes by roof type

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. The report explains what the images can tell you and what they cannot.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

These coverings sit directly on the layers beneath, so temperature differences frequently show through. We confirm any patterns with moisture readings.

What we’re asked to look at in Pound Hill

On big commercial and residential flat roofs, thermal imaging helps owners plan. It can suggest which areas may be wet and which seem dry, so we know where to take moisture readings.

People typically book a survey after spotting one of these:

  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Stains that keep coming back
  • Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
  • Damp around chimneys and parapets

Take a building like Pound Hill Infant Academy: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

What a good roof survey covers

Why act early in Pound Hill

Wet insulation under a flat roof doesn’t dry out on its own while the covering stays on. Over time, it insulates less well and can harm the deck. Finding them early can mean a smaller job. On a bungalow or cottage around Pound Hill, the roof sits close to the rooms below, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Pound Hill

Is my home in Pound Hill listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Are there drone restrictions around Pound Hill?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. The flight restriction zone around Gatwick Airport covers Pound Hill, or comes right up to its edge. Before any flight there, we ask the airport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it’s given. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.

Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?

The camera can point to heat loss and gaps in insulation. The survey isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the report shows where to look more closely.

Do you work in Pound Hill?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes Pound Hill.

What insurance do you have?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

What does a thermal roof survey show?

The camera records how the surface temperature varies. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat loss. We check what it shows with moisture readings.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

What happens on the day

We do not take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes an hour or two at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Parking around Pound Hill is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where it applies.

  1. First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
  4. Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
  5. We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Checking the roof from ground level

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

With a portfolio of properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, from shops and offices to industrial units. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.
