Thermal roof survey in Ramsey: what you get
Thermal imaging is a useful tool, but it has limits. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. That is why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding cannot be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. We survey commercial roofs, loft conversions and flat roofs, and people most often book us about water that travels before it shows and cold areas below the roof.
Villages like Ramsey frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

Tips that help
You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Because the images are paired with photos, it’s easy to find each area on the roof.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Ramsey
Is my home in Ramsey listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you cover smaller places like Ramsey?
Yes. Ramsey is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
When does the report arrive?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings because the camera can’t confirm water on its own.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.
What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?
The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Differences can suggest wet areas, missing insulation or heat loss, which we then check with moisture readings.
Leave it or get it looked at?
Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is frequently to open up the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. Older cottages and farmhouses around Ramsey can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £400, including VAT.

What happens on the day
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. Older rural homes like those around Ramsey can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We look at the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.
Before the survey
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Leave a clear route to the loft

What we cannot see
It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey. The full list of what we check.

What else we do in Ramsey
What a thermal roof survey looks like in Ramsey
Ramsey is within about 1 mile of the coast, and coastal wind can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.
For an older house near a landmark such as Parish Church of St Michael, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

What a survey costs
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- Roof area
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
What we need to know
A little information up front helps. It helps to include:
- Dates you are working to, like exchange
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Ramsey?
Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated roof areas can show up on the camera, particularly when it’s warm inside and cold outside.
A survey can pick up problems like:
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Water that travels before it shows
- Heat escaping through the roof
If you look after a building such as Harwich and Dovercourt High School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
