  • Damp that repairs haven’t cured
  • Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
  • Leaks far from where the stain appears

Thermal roof surveys for Remenham homes and businesses

What you can safely check yourself

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Thermal roof survey in Remenham: what you get

A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves often show up as temperature differences. The difference shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. It is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. We survey commercial roofs, insulated roof spaces and loft conversions, and the problems we are asked to look at most are moisture around outlets and upstands and missing or slipped insulation.

In a small place like Remenham, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

What happens on the day

We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit usually takes an hour or two for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Older rural homes like those around Remenham can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We check the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it is safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
  5. The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear

Common questions in Remenham

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Remenham?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you cover Remenham?

Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Remenham is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the property.

What’s in the survey report?

A report with photos, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, in order of urgency where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

What’s the best way to book?

To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know the address and what you need to know. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To arrange a date, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.

What a thermal roof survey looks like in Remenham

Greenlands, about 1 mile north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Remenham. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Nicholas, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Remenham means lost rooms as well as repairs. Anyone responsible for a site like Rupert House School will know that big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Tips from our surveys

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch

You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Each thermal image is matched to a normal photo, so the areas are easy to locate.

Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.

What we cannot see

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.
