Ridley Thermal Roof Survey
Thermal roof surveys across Ridley, backed by more than 20 years’ experience. Every survey ends with a written report and photos.
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
How a thermal roof survey works in Ridley
A thermal survey isn’t a quick fix for every roof problem. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. That is why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding can’t be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. We’re often asked to look into thin or uneven insulation in the roof and moisture around outlets and upstands, on ceilings below the roof, flat roofs and loft conversions.
Older buildings in small places like Ridley may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Roof by roof
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Water often gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. Thermal imaging can help show damp patterns around them.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Thermal images of a pitched roof can still show heat loss patterns and some damp areas. The report explains what the images can tell you and what they can’t.
What happens on the day
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like Ridley, the journey is planned ahead of time: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Getting ready for the survey
- Let us know about parking before the day
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Leave side gates unlocked

Tips that help
A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Make sure the loft can be reached safely
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
If the images suggest moisture that can’t be confirmed, we will say what would help next, for example electronic leak detection or a roofer opening up a small section.
After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry, when the conditions are suitable.
Why get it checked now?
Wet insulation under a flat roof does not dry out on its own while the covering stays on. Over time, it insulates less well and can harm the deck. Finding them early can mean a smaller job. In a place like Ridley, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover
It’s useful to know what a survey won’t do before booking:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- A formal energy assessment
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

Thermal roof surveys in Ridley: local notes
If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. The wider area around Ridley has a long history of building, with Cobham College about 4 miles north-east. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
If you look after a building such as Meopham School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you live in an older home near Church of Saint Peter, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book and it will help the survey.
Ridley questions
Is Ridley in the area you cover?
Yes, Ridley is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How do I find out if my home in Ridley is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?
A thermal camera shows differences in surface temperature. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or heat escaping. We check what it shows with moisture readings.
What’s the best way to book?
It’s easiest to phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. Give us the address and a few details about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
It comes with our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
Will I get photos?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and the report uses them to show each finding.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
