Thermal roof survey in Rivenhall: what you get

A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves often show up as temperature differences. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. It is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. We’re often asked to look into areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, on insulated roof spaces, pitched roof slopes and commercial roofs.

Somewhere as small as Rivenhall, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Questions from Rivenhall

Is Rivenhall within the area you cover?

Yes, Rivenhall is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

How do I find out if my home in Rivenhall is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it’s safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

What’s in the report?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photographs throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.

How do I book a survey in Rivenhall?

Just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email. We will ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date, weekday or weekend.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, which we then check with moisture readings.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.

Airspace, weather and Rivenhall roofs

Older buildings in Essex often have clay tiles and weatherboarding, alongside plenty of post-war and newer estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.

The streets around a church like Church of St Mary and All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

What we are asked to look at in Rivenhall

Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. Temperature patterns can help narrow down where to look.

We’re often asked to look at:

  • Missing or slipped insulation
  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Water getting in at parapets and stacks
  • Areas of a flat roof that may hold water

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Rivenhall Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Which limits apply to the survey
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • When you’ll get the report
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours

What a good roof survey covers

What we do, step by step

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Cottages and farmhouses around Rivenhall frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Before the survey

  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Leave it or get it looked at?

A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so improvements can go where they’re needed. Outbuildings and barns around Rivenhall are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.

Can I check my roof myself?

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys

Our packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
