Thermal roof survey in Faulkbourne: what you get

What a thermal camera can show depends a lot on the weather. It’s useful to have a sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air. Rain, wind and cloud can all make the patterns weaker. We talk through the forecast as you book, and the report explains how the conditions on the day affected the results. We survey flat roofs, ceilings below the roof and pitched roof slopes, and common reasons people get in touch are cold areas below the roof and stains that keep coming back.

Somewhere as small as Faulkbourne, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

For older village homes like those around Faulkbourne, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

Thermal roof surveys around Faulkbourne

Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, alongside plenty of post-war and newer estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as New Rickstones Academy, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Parish Church of St Germanus, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

What this survey can’t tell you

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What our survey covers.

  • Commercial roofs
  • Flat roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Loft conversions

What we do, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. It usually takes about one to two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Around Faulkbourne, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We start with the roof, its history and any signs of damp or heat loss.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.

Before we arrive

  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Advice

Checking the roof from the ground

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That is where a survey comes in.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Prices for thermal roof surveys in Faulkbourne

Prices always include VAT. What changes the price is:

  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Roof area
  • The shape of the roof and its details

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £400, including VAT.

Getting in touch

We’ll usually ask about:

  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Any marks or damp showing indoors

To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you’d like to know about the roof. You’ll know the price before anything is booked.

How the survey changes by roof type

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Damp at junctions can be hard to see by eye. We combine a close visual check with the thermal images.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Cracks in GRP can let water into the boards beneath. We look at cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there’s a pattern around them.

Faulkbourne questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Faulkbourne?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Faulkbourne?

Yes, Faulkbourne is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?

It can be useful, though pitched roofs are typically harder to read. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.

What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?

The images show how warm or cool each part of the surface is. Differences can suggest wet areas, missing insulation or heat loss, which we then check with moisture readings.

Does the weather affect a thermal survey?

The weather makes a real difference. A sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air all help. Rain and strong wind can make the images less clear, so we discuss the forecast when booking.

How soon will I get the report?

Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline when booking.

How many surveys have you done?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
