Thermal Roof Survey in Rock

  • Patches of heat loss across the roof
  • Leaks far from where the stain appears
  • Damp patches with no obvious cause

Thermal roof surveys in Rock

Different roofs, different checks

Pitched slate and tile roofs

From inside the loft, the camera can help with damp around chimneys, valleys and roof windows. We check any patterns with moisture readings.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We look at cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there is a pattern around them.

Thermal roof survey in Rock: what you get

On a flat roof, wet insulation holds heat longer than dry insulation. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. This can give an idea of how far water has travelled beneath the membrane, something you can’t usually tell from the surface. We then check those areas with moisture readings. We’re frequently asked to look into water getting in at parapets and stacks and stains that keep coming back, on flat roofs, pitched roof slopes and commercial roofs.

In a small place like Rock, open ground can mean strong wind. High wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Rock

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which can make access easier.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Rock

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Rock?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Do you cover smaller places like Rock?

Yes, Rock is covered. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

What does a thermal roof survey show?

It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.

Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?

Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. The survey is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the images show where improvements may help.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so whoever owns or manages the building needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.

Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?

It can help narrow down where water may be getting in. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It’s used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings because the camera can’t confirm water on its own.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

Not directly. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.

Flying and imaging in Rock

Historic houses such as Parham House, about 3.9 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Rock goes. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

Take a building like St Mary's CofE Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Rock is about 6 miles north of Worthing, in West Sussex. Rock is one of many places we visit across West Sussex. We cover towns and villages across West Sussex. We also survey roofs in Brighton.

Thermal roof surveys in RH20 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you need a thermal roof survey at a property on Old London Road, London Road and Lamorna Close or a nearby road, we can survey it. Other places close to Rock include Washington (1 mile south), Heath Common (1 mile north-west), Sullington (1 mile west), Warminghurst (2 miles north) and Storrington (2 miles west). Tips that help

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Leave the roof to people with safe access
  • Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
  • Talk to us about the weather when booking

Once we’ve been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. Each image is explained in plain words, alongside what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.

Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Insulation is frequently moved when people work in the roof space.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Rock

Once a leak has been fixed, people frequently ask whether the roof is still wet. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain when the conditions on the day are suitable.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Gaps in loft insulation
  • Damp around roof outlets and upstands
  • Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
  • Ceilings that feel colder in places

The streets around a church such as The Parish Church of St Mary are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • What they will not be able to tell you
  • Whether VAT is added on top

What to expect from a roof survey

Why act early in Rock

Thermal images can suggest the extent of wet areas without cutting into the roof. That helps you and your roofer decide what really needs replacing. For an older or listed building in a place like Rock, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.

Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.

What we do, step by step

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take an hour or two for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Older rural homes like those around Rock can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
