Thermal roof surveys near Roydon

Flying and imaging in Roydon

Older buildings in Essex frequently have clay tiles and weatherboarding, alongside lots of post-war and newer estates. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

If you live in an older home near St Peter's Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Take a building like Roydon Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Roydon is about 3 miles north-east of Hoddesdon, in Essex. We provide thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Roydon. Across Essex, we cover Roydon. We also survey roofs in Chelmsford.

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Roydon

Your report sets out the thermal images alongside ordinary photos, making it clear where on the roof each pattern is. Each one comes with an explanation, the moisture readings and our recommendation. Premium reports are sent the same day. You can talk the findings through with us at the in-person consultation. A follow-up 12 months later is included too. We survey insulated roof spaces, commercial roofs and ceilings below the roof, and common reasons people get in touch are damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering.

Somewhere as small as Roydon, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

Practical tips

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
  • Heat the home normally on the days before
  • Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
  • Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn

After the visit, we put the thermal images, photos and moisture readings into one report. We explain what each image may mean, with our recommendations. Premium reports are sent the same day.

Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.

What happens on the day

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey usually takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Older roofs in small places like Roydon can have low, tight loft spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Advice

Checking the roof from ground level

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

What this survey cannot tell you

It’s useful to know what a survey will not do before you book:

  • Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
  • An energy rating for the building
  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

Roof by roof

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

These coverings sit directly on the layers beneath, so temperature differences often show through. Any patterns are checked with moisture readings.

Loft insulation

From inside the loft, thermal imaging can show gaps in insulation and cold spots. We inspect the loft where it can be reached safely.

Why it is worth a survey now in Roydon

Wet insulation under a flat roof does not dry out on its own while the covering stays on. Over time, it insulates less well and can harm the deck. Finding them early can mean a smaller job. Older cottages and farmhouses around Roydon can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.

Roydon: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Roydon?

Yes. Roydon is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Roydon?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

The camera does not see water itself. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, but we check each finding with moisture readings.

Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?

Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. The survey isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the report shows where to look more closely.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?

A thermal camera shows differences in surface temperature. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat loss. We check what it shows with moisture readings.
