Thermal roof survey in Slindon Common
Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging often helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can hide what’s below, so we also look from the loft where we can reach it safely. We survey pitched roof slopes, flat roofs and insulated roof spaces, and people most often book us about damp around roof outlets and upstands and wet insulation beneath the membrane.
Somewhere as small as Slindon Common, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
After the visit, you get a written report with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Checking the roof from ground level
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Questions from Slindon Common
Will you come out to Slindon Common?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Slindon Common?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only if it is safe. We inspect what can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in.
What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?
It records surface temperature across the roof. Differences can suggest wet areas, missing insulation or heat loss, which we then check with moisture readings.
Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?
On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. We explain what the images can and can’t tell you, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?
Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. The survey is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the report shows where to look more closely.
The survey, step by step
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will get on with the inspection. A typical survey takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In a hamlet or village like Slindon Common, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Check we can get to the back of the property
Arrange a survey
Not sure which survey you need? It’s easiest to phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.

Glossy GRP can reflect heat. We take that into account and check findings with moisture readings.
Why it is worth a survey now in Slindon Common
The longer moisture sits in a roof, the more it can affect timbers and finishes below. Surveying sooner gives you more choice about what to do. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Drones, thermal imaging and Slindon Common roofs
The coast is about 5 miles or less from Slindon Common. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Slindon CofE Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Bignor Roman Villa, about 4.6 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Slindon Common. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself. If you live in an older home near The Parish Church of St Mary, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

- Proving moisture from the images alone
- A formal energy assessment
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
