Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Southchurch

Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves often show up as temperature differences. It works best when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We survey commercial roofs, pitched roof slopes and insulated roof spaces, and people most frequently book us about patches of heat loss across the roof and wet areas near outlets and upstands.

Around Southchurch, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

When to book a survey in Southchurch

Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated roof areas can show up on the camera, especially when it’s warm inside and cold outside.

We are often asked to look at:

  • Damp patches with no obvious cause
  • Patches of heat loss across the roof
  • Wet insulation beneath the membrane
  • Damp around chimneys and parapets

Take an older house close to Church of the Holy Trinity: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • What they won’t be able to tell you

Practical tips

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Keep a record of when stains appear

You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Each thermal image is matched to a normal photo, so the areas are easy to locate.

Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Insulation is often moved when people work in the roof space.

Common questions in Southchurch

Will you come out to Southchurch?

Yes. Southchurch is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Is drone flying allowed in Southchurch?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. London Southend Airport is about 3 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.

What’s in the report?

Written findings with photos, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, in order of urgency where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. We check the roof, not the whole building, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we’re not structural engineers and don’t carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys run on any day of the week. To arrange a date, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

What we do, step by step

Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Southchurch, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there’s safe access, completes the picture.

  1. You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
  4. We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Before the survey

  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Check pets are kept safely away

Different roofs, different checks

Single-ply and EPDM roofs

Many single-ply and EPDM roofs sit on insulation boards. Wet boards can show as temperature differences on the images.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

These coverings sit directly on the layers beneath, so temperature differences frequently show through. Any patterns are checked with moisture readings.

Airspace, weather and Southchurch roofs

The coast is about 1 mile or less from Southchurch, and wind off the sea can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. About 0.5 miles south-west lies Southchurch Hall, a reminder of how long the area around Southchurch has been built on. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

If you look after a building like Hamstel Infant School and Nursery, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. Hotels and guest houses near Southchurch can’t easily close rooms for a leak, so it pays to find faults before guests do.

Southchurch is about 2 miles east of Southend-on-Sea, in Southend-on-Sea. We carry out thermal roof surveys for householders, landlords and businesses in Southchurch and the surrounding area. We cover towns and villages across Southend-on-Sea. Chelmsford is in our area too.

Neighbouring places we cover for thermal roof surveys include Thorpe Bay (1 mile south-east), Prittlewell (1 mile west), Stonebridge (2 miles north-east), North Shoebury (2 miles east) and Shoeburyness (2 miles east). Within a short drive, we also cover Leigh-on-Sea (4 miles west), Chalkwell (3 miles west), Eastwood (4 miles north-west) and Great Wakering (3 miles east).

Prices for thermal roof surveys in Southchurch

Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. This is what makes a difference:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • The roof’s overall size
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Getting in touch

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It is enough to tell us:

  • Dates you’re working to, like exchange
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window

Once you know what you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Southchurch

A damp patch that keeps coming back typically has a cause that hasn’t been found. Thermal imaging with moisture readings can help narrow it down, instead of trying repair after repair. Arranging work in a smaller place like Southchurch is easier with notice than in an emergency. A survey gives you that notice.

Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can be seen safely and which survey you book.
