Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in St Lawrence Bay
A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. It isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. We survey pitched roof slopes, flat roofs and commercial roofs, and people most often book us about gaps in loft insulation and damp around chimneys and parapets.
In a village or hamlet like St Lawrence Bay, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

What else we do in St Lawrence Bay
Thermal roof surveys in St Lawrence Bay: local notes
St Lawrence Bay is within about 1 mile of the coast, and coastal wind can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, ideally before any re-roofing is planned.
Take an older house close to St Lawrence Church Centre: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.
St Lawrence Bay is about 6 miles east of Heybridge, in Essex. We survey roofs in St Lawrence Bay and the rest of Essex. Our area takes in places right across Essex, from the larger towns to small villages. Chelmsford is in our area too.
We cover every part of CM0 for thermal roof surveys and the streets around it. FAQs for St Lawrence Bay
Do you cover St Lawrence Bay?
Yes, St Lawrence Bay is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in St Lawrence Bay?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so whoever owns or manages the building needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. It shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. We look from the loft as well, where there is safe access.
What conditions are best for thermal imaging?
Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. A dry surface, little wind and a sunny spell beforehand help most. Our report notes the conditions and how they affected the findings.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed when you book.
What you can safely check yourself
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
When you need someone else
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

What we’re asked to look at in St Lawrence Bay
Some buyers want extra detail before they commit to a purchase. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where it applies and a same-day report, which helps when timescales are tight.
Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Cold areas below the roof
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
For any home in St Lawrence Bay, it is the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right.
Before you book anyone
- Their track record with similar roofs
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- What happens after the report arrives
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
What happens on the day
We do not take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. Most visits take an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere like St Lawrence Bay needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
How to prepare
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
Book a survey
Most bookings start with a short call: call 07833 053749 or drop us an email, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
