Stokenchurch Thermal Roof Survey
Find out the condition of the roof at your property in Stokenchurch. Visits run on weekdays and weekends, in the daytime.
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
Drones, thermal imaging and Stokenchurch roofs
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Buckinghamshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Stokenchurch Methodist Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Stokenchurch Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. West Wycombe Park House, about 4.2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Stokenchurch. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

About our thermal roof survey in Stokenchurch
Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves frequently show up as temperature differences. The difference shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and cold outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. It is not an energy rating or a heat loss calculation. If you are worried about cold spots on ceilings under the roof and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, we can find out what’s behind it.
Around Stokenchurch, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Findings are checked with moisture readings where needed. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Tips that help
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
- Remember the conditions on the day affect the results
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
Where a pattern cannot be confirmed, the report says what could help, such as electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.
Make sure loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Insulation is often moved when people work in the loft space.
Stokenchurch questions
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Stokenchurch?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is Stokenchurch in the area you cover?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Does the weather affect a thermal survey?
Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. A dry surface, little wind and a sunny spell beforehand help most. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when you book and we will explain what’s needed.
Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?
On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. We explain what the images can and cannot tell you, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
When you need someone else
Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

DIY checks: what’s safe
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.
Landlords and letting agents in Stokenchurch book surveys as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, which helps you plan work between tenancies.
What happens if roof problems are left?
If a big flat roof may need replacing, knowing the wet areas first is useful. Images backed by moisture readings show where problems seem to be before you commit. In a smaller place like Stokenchurch, wherever a roof is exposed, a loose ridge or flashing doesn’t stay loose for long. Each storm lifts it a little further.
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

The survey, step by step
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. A typical survey takes an hour or two at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. With a bit of garden around a house, as there frequently is around Stokenchurch, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Mention any side of the property we cannot get to. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
