Street End questions
How do I find out if my home in Street End is listed?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Will you come out to Street End?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Can a thermal camera see water?
Not directly. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. That is why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?
On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. We explain what the images can and can’t tell you, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
What conditions are best for thermal imaging?
Conditions on the day affect the results. A sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air all help. Rain and strong wind can make the images less clear, so we talk through the forecast when booking.
What does the report include?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Street End
Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. It also includes a drone inspection where it applies, a structural analysis and a same-day report. An in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up are included too. You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. We survey pitched roof slopes, commercial roofs and loft conversions, and people most often book us about cold spots on ceilings under the roof and damp that repairs haven’t cured.
Some older homes in villages like Street End are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later, for example when you want to check whether anything has changed.

What this survey can’t tell you
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- A formal energy assessment
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.
What this survey covers
- Commercial roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Insulated roof spaces
How it works
After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photos. As for time on site, it normally takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Somewhere like Street End needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
How to prepare
- Keep pets in another room
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear

What a survey costs
Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- Height and safe access
A Basic Survey starts from £150, including VAT. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You will know the price for your roof before booking.
What to tell us when you get in touch
We will normally ask about:
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
Not sure which survey you need? It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will explain the options and the price.
Can I check my roof myself?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.
Useful tips for Street End property owners
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Keep a record of when stains appear
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
Where a pattern can’t be confirmed, the report says what could help, such as electronic leak detection or opening up a small area.
Keep an eye on ceilings under the roof for new stains. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.
When to book a survey in Street End
Some defects simply cannot be seen with the eye. Trapped moisture, missing insulation and hidden heat loss are three examples. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Cold areas below the roof
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
- Water that travels before it shows
- Gaps in loft insulation
The streets around a church like St Mary Our Lady Sidlesham are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Questions to ask before you book
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- What they will not be able to tell you
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- Is VAT included in the price?
Airspace, weather and Street End roofs
Street End is within about 2 miles of the coast. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
If you look after a building such as Sidlesham Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
